Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about ukulele lessons at ND Music Academy.

Q

What age is best to start learning ukulele?

The ukulele is great for all ages. Its small size and soft nylon strings make it especially comfortable for young children, while adults love its portability and quick learning curve. We teach students from age 5 and up.

Q

Is ukulele a good instrument for neurodivergent learners?

Yes. The ukulele is small, lightweight, and easy to hold, making it a great choice for neurodivergent students. We use the ukulele’s simplicity to build early wins and confidence for all learners.

Q

Is the ukulele a good stepping stone to guitar?

Absolutely. We often recommend that younger students start with ukulele before guitar because it has fewer strings and is easier to handle. The ukulele is tuned similarly to the upper four strings of the guitar, so many chord shapes transfer directly. Strumming techniques carry over as well, making the transition to guitar feel natural when the student is ready.

Q

What songs can I learn on ukulele?

You’d be surprised how many songs work on ukulele. We teach pop, folk, rock, Hawaiian, and jazz standards. Our goal is to get students playing songs from the very first lesson—if a student can pick up four chords (C, Am, F, and G7), they already have enough to play a real song.

Q
