Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about composition lessons at ND Music Academy.

Q

Can neurodivergent students learn music composition?

Yes. Many neurodivergent students excel at composition because it combines pattern recognition, structure, and creative expression. We tailor composition lessons to each student’s interests and learning style.

Q

What software do you use for composition lessons?

For composition, we primarily use notation software like Dorico, Noteflight, and Flat to write and arrange music. We’ll help you choose the right tools for your goals and teach you how to use them effectively.

Q

Do I need to play an instrument to learn composition?

It’s not required, but it definitely helps. Playing an instrument—especially piano—makes it much easier to decode music theory and hear what you’re writing. Without that foundation, composition can feel very abstract. If you don’t play yet, we can work on both skills together.

Q

What styles of music can I compose?

Anything you’re interested in. Our students compose classical, jazz, pop, and film music. Lessons cover the fundamentals that apply across all styles, and we help you develop your own creative voice.

Q

Do you offer composition lessons for beginners in Los Angeles?

Yes. We offer Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced composition instruction in Sherman Oaks, serving all of Los Angeles. No prior composing experience is needed to start. New students receive 50% off their first 3 lessons.
