Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about music theory lessons at ND Music Academy.

Q

Do I need to play an instrument to study music theory?

No—music theory doesn’t require an instrument. That said, piano is especially helpful since it’s essentially music theory laid out on a keyboard. Playing an instrument alongside theory lessons also keeps the material from feeling too dry and makes concepts stick faster.

Q

Is music theory helpful for neurodivergent learners?

Music theory is full of patterns and rules, which many neurodivergent students find satisfying and intuitive. One thing we pay close attention to is making sure foundational concepts are solid before moving on, since gaps can make it harder to progress. We also like to pair theory with hands-on playing so the material stays engaging rather than abstract.

Q

What’s the difference between music theory and composition?

Music theory covers the nuts and bolts of how music works—scales, chords, rhythm, and structure. Composition uses that knowledge to create original music, and goes further into instrument ranges, transposition, and notational standards. They’re very different subjects, but composition relies heavily on a solid understanding of music theory.

Q

Can music theory help me become a better musician?

Absolutely. When you understand theory, you can quickly spot patterns and memorize music far more easily. Without it, you’re stuck seeing things on a smaller level. We often compare it to learning to read paragraphs instead of single letters—theory lets you see the big picture.
