Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about music theory lessons at ND Music Academy.

Q

Do I need to play an instrument to study music theory?

It’s not required, but it helps. Playing an instrument—especially piano—makes it much easier to hear and apply what you’re learning. If you don’t play yet, we can work on both skills together.

Q

Is music theory helpful for neurodivergent learners?

Yes. Music theory provides clear rules and patterns that many neurodivergent students find satisfying and intuitive. We adapt the pace and teaching methods to each student’s learning style.

Q

What’s the difference between music theory and composition?

Music theory is about understanding how music works—scales, chords, rhythm, and structure. Composition is about writing original music. Theory gives you the tools and vocabulary; composition puts them to creative use.

Q

Can music theory help me become a better musician?

Absolutely. Understanding theory helps you learn songs faster, improvise with confidence, communicate with other musicians, and make sense of what you’re playing. It benefits students at every level.
